Temp gauge acting up

Ok, so this is weird. When I turn my car off, and leave the headlights on, the needle will do this:

When I start the car, it goes here:

And with the car off, and headlights off, it goes all the way down. Why does it do this and is it normal?

    Also! Before I forget, does my battery gauge seem a little low? I know Ford used really crappy 75 amp alternators on the Foxes, but when I roll up the windows all the way and hold the button, ALL the lights will dim. Should have the alt tested I guess. Brand new Motorcraft battery.
