Road trip help: OKC, Arlington, Houston and points in between?

To my forum brethren: I'm going to be taking the family on a road trip to Arlington, Tx and then on to Houston coming up soon. It looks like we'll be spending two nights in Oklahoma City each way. Have 1 wife and kids ages 10 and 7, and am looking for any good eating establishments, attractions, places of interest to help break up the driving. Looking to spend about 25 hours on the highways so any ideas whatsoever most appreciated! If anyone knows a good hotel/motel in OKC, that would be most appreciated too! Have accommodations already for Arlington and Houston, but have never been to any of these three cities and would really like to know where to go!

  • Bricktown in OKC is the touristy area of town. There's some good places to eat there but I don't remember any specifics.
  • You may laugh at this, but for eating, I look up the "small town" places that usually make television for something special. When my dad and I do road trips to new places, we make it a point to stop at places we've never been before or can't get in our local area, whether it be a chain or small "mom and pops" restaurant. It usually involves a little research, but it a lot of fun.

Example: Maybe check out the Man vs. Food places? Maybe even take on a challenge while you're there? ;)

Sometimes you'll find the best places just from driving around or stopping to ask the locals. When my dad and I drove 1550 miles back with an SSP Mustang, we stopped at the visitor info areas and asked "what would you do if you never have been here." We got some interesting answers and recommendations and then picked what we thought we'd have the most interest in. Just be careful who you stop and ask...

  • Thanks Joe. What a fun website. OKC brings up a place called Mama E's Wings and Waffles. Sounds adventurous.
  • I'm from Tulsa but occasionally go to OKC. Yes, you have to go check out Bricktown. There's lots to do and see there. http://bricktownokc.com/ There's motels right there too, but they aren't cheap. I'm not a zoo person myself, but supposedly it's one of the better ones around this part of the country. There's a couple of small amusement parks...Frontier City, White Water..... nothing big like 6 flags or anything. The National Cowboy Museum and Science Museum are both there. http://www.okcadventure.com/ Maybe that will give you some ideas anyway. Now if you decide to come to Tulsa I can definitely help you out there. Have a great trip!!!
